Hawthorne

I've been out looking for May Blossom, or Hawthorn flowers this weekend... unfortunately none made it out for May Day in my neck of the woods... but I found this goddess tree...

8th april

The new hawthorne buds are also known as 'bread and cheese' in some areas... have you ever tried them? You can eat the buds straight from the tree... quite tasty!

 20th april

The leaves and buds have developed quickly throughout April, rapidly filling the hedges with green....

24th April

The flowers have certainly been racing to appear, and the boughs are so full, they will be spectacular...

28th april

But although there are glimpses of white beginning to show in the odd bud, the blossom is yet to unfurl...

1st may

This is what we have to look forward to though, and it won't be long....  The Queen of May!

Hi Suzi

I don't have hawthorns here in the subtropics but I remember them fondly from my previous life in New Zealand.
One of our homes was circled in Hawthorn bushes, and we had a street called Hawthorn Road in Christchurch...

Happy days

Yes its true, you can definitely eat the buds... best on their own when they are tiny, otherwise you can add them to salads or soups! My mum showed me where to find hedgerow 'bread & cheese" when i was little...

These are all great shots. The tree you began with is sculpture like. I always love to see early buds and the full blooms you ended with are gorgeous.

I love that tree's trunk, so much character! You are in for some serious flowers! I had no idea that hawthorne buds are edible, thanks for letting us know.

I didn't know that you could eat them. I just started paying attention to leaves and buds last season and wonder why I never paid attention before..they are amazing.

Thank you for the suggestions to use my other blog for more 'feelings'. Right now I am really devastated by what is going to happen to all the wildlife from the oil spill..it is so very sad... Michelle
